Galleria Franchetti Ca' d'Oro

The Giorgio Franchetti Gallery at Ca' d'Oro is housed in one of Venice's most prestigious late Gothic palaces

The important art collection occupies two floors of the palace

Originally owned by Baron Giorgio Franchetti (1865-1927), he donated his collections and the building itself to the Italian State in 1916, after extensive restoration work to its original splendor. The nobleman's collection, including furniture, paintings, medals, tapestries, bronzes, and sculptures, was expanded over the years with the addition of Renaissance works from suppressed or demolished religious buildings and collections from the Gallerie dell'Accademia and the Archaeological Museum

A visit to the Giorgio Franchetti Gallery at Ca' d'Oro, which opened to the public in 1927, does not end with the Gallery alone. The building still retains the structure of the ancient Venetian warehouse. Of particular interest is the internal courtyard, with its evocative mosaic floor in ancient marbles, created by the baron himself, evoking early Christian basilicas, and the original wellhead sculpted by Bartolomeo Bon in 1427. In the atrium—an ideal guardian of the building and its fate—the ashes of Giorgio Franchetti rest beneath a porphyry memorial stone

During 2023-2024, the Gallery is undergoing a general restyling and exhibition update, for which reason the first floor is closed to the public. The current visitor route winds through the monumental courtyard, loggia, and rooms on the second floor
