J.B. Blunk

American, 1926 - 2002

A pivotal figure of the back-to-the-land movement and often considered a California Craftsman, J.B. Blunk was a renowned sculptor and craftsman whose life and work were shaped by his close relationship with nature. He is best known for large-scale wooden seating sculptures, including Untitled, c. 1975, which balance utility with sculptural form. He hand-built and crafted nearly every element of the Blunk House, his home in Inverness, California, including its furniture and ceramics; the house is widely regarded as his greatest work

Blunk’s practice was informed by Japanese philosophies of simplicity, material honesty, and devotion to nature, visible in his use of salvaged components and restrained forms. He studied under ceramic artist Kitaoji Rosanjin and potter Kaneshige Toyo, whose training emphasized the influence of natural elements, irregularity, and imperfection, and later studied at the University of California, Los Angeles. His work is held in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, M+ Museum, and the Oakland Museum of California
