Head of a Deity
Cambodja, ca. 1182 - 1215
A carved head of a deity presented by Axel Vervoordt Gallery, the work carries the quiet authority of a sacred fragment. Its worn surface and softened facial structure suggest an object shaped by devotion, time, and repeated acts of looking, where the figure’s original religious force remains present through restraint rather than theatrical expression
Separated from its original body or architectural context, the head becomes more concentrated in its presence. The fragment holds a balance between human likeness and divine distance, allowing the erosion, surface losses, and remaining features to become part of its visual power rather than interruptions to it
Axel Vevoordt Gallery
Boris created the Axel Vervoordt Gallery in 2011. The gallery opened in a historic space in the centre of Antwerp with an exhibition by Günther Uecker
Boris chose to open the gallery in the same exact place where his father had mounted exhibitions for Uecker and Jef Verheyen in the 1970s. The first exhibition — and those that followed — linked this new start to the company’s long history with art and its original home in the Vlaeykensgang. This continued a path of more than 40 years of working closely with artists
