  • The Babliano collection draws upon the carved permanence of ancient artifacts and ritual objects, alongside the disciplined proportion of classical architectural traditions. Echoes of Roman structural clarity and the restrained precision of French Neoclassicism are present throughout, reinterpreted through a contemporary sculptural language that privileges stillness, gravity, and spatial awareness.

Each work emerges with controlled force. Mass transitions gradually into curve and edges soften into shadow. Planes are calibrated to receive and temper light, allowing the works to shift subtly in response to movement and human presence. Form is resolved through proportion and structural coherence, guided by an architectural approach that emphasizes balance, clarity, and material weight.

Executed in blackened bronze and handcrafted in France by Ateliers Saint-Jacques, the works reflect a disciplined approach to European craftsmanship. The patinated surface absorbs and modulates light, deepening the perception of weight while revealing quiet tonal variation. Subtle traces of hand-finishing remain visible upon close inspection, reinforcing the material’s integrity and the presence of the maker.

The Babliano collection reflects Lee’s architectural methodology through works that assert physical authority while maintaining compositional balance and cultural resonance. Their sense of continuity is carried through material, proportion, and the disciplined act of making.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

FRANCESCO BALZANO

Born Paris, France, 1979

An artist based in Paris, Balzano creates minimal, absolute, and timeless furniture, objects, and interiors. He seeks emotional resonance in the dialogue between shape and material, and reveals a poetic relationship between scale, light, and space. His aesthetic draws from the enduring presence of Venice, Rome, and Florence, where he spent much of his childhood.

Guided by the principle that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, his work brings together noble materials, clarity of line, and precise architectural reference with everyday function. A measured tension runs throughout, between classical form and contemporary invention, calm and intensity, continuity and change. Beneath a restrained surface, the work carries layered complexity, inviting individual interpretation.

Committed to enduring craftsmanship, Balzano works closely with master artisans at Ateliers Saint-Jacques and La Societe STRS to produce each piece. Works are created in limited editions, signed and numbered.

After studying architecture and design at Penninghen, Balzano joined the studio of Joseph Dirand, contributing to international projects. He has been recognized multiple times among AD France’s 100 leading designers. In 2018, he established his atelier, developing custom and limited-edition furniture alongside interior commissions. He later founded After Bach in 2020, Sogno Studio in 2023 as a photographic collective, and Sattio Studio in 2024, where he serves as artistic director.

His debut New York solo exhibition, Inizio, opened at STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN in 2024. Focused on the origin of form, the exhibition presented two bodies of work centered on simplicity, craftsmanship, and material depth. In 2025, he was awarded a residency at the Villa Medici with the Fondation Bettencourt Schueller.
