  • A vertical fragment preserving the lower register of a hieroglyphic column, where the inscription reads Beloved of Amen-Re Lord of Heaven. The signs are carved in sunk relief with controlled depth and fine incised detailing, allowing light to settle within each mark while faint traces of pigment remain embedded in the surface

The composition is contained within a shallow border, its order contrasted by the fractured right edge where the stone breaks away. The balance between precise carving and erosion gives the piece a quiet tension, holding both legibility and loss within a single plane

    Provenance

Private Collection, England, mid 19th century (A penciled inscription at the back with the date 1855)

    Charles Ede, London, 1976
