  • Carved from a single block of buff-toned sandstone, this torso retains only the essential gestures of form. The surface is marked by restrained incised lines indicating a monastic robe drawn across one shoulder, secured by a narrow sash with a subtle folded termination. The absence of head, limbs, and hands reinforces the sculptural integrity of the remaining body, allowing material, proportion, and stillness to take precedence

Originally part of a larger devotional figure, the posture suggests a seated Buddha, likely depicted in bhumisparsha mudra. The figure would have been carved in separate elements and assembled to form the complete sculpture

The work originates from Ayutthaya, the former capital of the Kingdom of Siam, which flourished between the 14th and 18th centuries as a centre of cultural exchange and craftsmanship. Following its destruction in 1767, the city fell into ruin, leaving behind fragments—architectural and sculptural—that speak quietly of its former presence
